Paris / NYC Artist Studios Database Accepting Submissions

ARTISTS STUDIOS is an online database of the strongest non-represented art in the New York City greater metropolitan area–and, now, Paris. The Artists Studios online database of non-represented art seeks to create an online space in which one can view art that is less accessible than art created by represented artists.

Artist Studios is currently accepting online submissions from artists who wish to be included in the AS | ARTISTS STUDIOS database.

Artists are selected primarily on the basis of their artwork. AS/Artist Studios expects artists to be committed and have a body of completed work. However, they do not require formal training nor education.

To be considered, all applicants must be 1. located in New York City and the greater metropolitan region; 2. not represented by any New York City gallery, and; 3. not enrolled in an academic program. Artists in residency programs may apply.

Applicants should contact submissions@artists-studios.com  if you receive an error response please email info@artists-studios.com with “Submission” in the subject line.

Moreover, provide a brief bio, artist statement, resume or curriculum vitae, maximum of ten images of artwork, and link to website (if applicable).

AS does not review artist portfolios or meet with artists in person until they have received and reviewed applications. Please allow us up to two weeks for response.

Accepted artists must meet with an AS | ARTISTS STUDIOS representative to present artwork. Further details are provided after acceptance.

Jill Conner, founder of AS | ARTISTS STUDIOS, is the New York Editor of WM | Whitehot Magazine as well as the Editor of On-Verge | Alternative Art Criticism, a collaboration between the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) and CUE Art Foundation. As an independent curator, Jill is interested in opening discourse for strong art that has been overlooked. Upcoming projects include a curated group exhibition at A.I.R. Gallery in Spring 2013 as well as THAW a group show that will appear at the Dorsky Gallery in November 2013.

Seek Art

English: seek truth from facts

English: seek truth from facts (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Seek Art, a Beta site for what I refer to as high-end art, produced the RAZE site-specific exhibition in Beijing featuring a range of media, including sculpture, installations, sound, and street actions with QR-Codes appearing as part of the exhibition pointing to a media based project online.

For RAZE, the artist Zhang Ding served placebo ecstasy-shaped cakes to the viewing audience during his performance, inviting them to consume and altering their states of mind or experience through participation. The artist then took portraits of viewers.

Seek Art then produced a limited edition DVD of the RAZE exhibition, available in their /Lab.

The Seek Art shop offers limited-edition art objects created by  artists and produced by their /lab.

The SEEK-ART.com network of international artists range in medium and practice.  Michele Thursz, Founder and Artistic Director, is an independent cultural producer and consultant based in New York City. From 1999-2009, Thursz co-founded and directed Moving Image Gallery [MIG], NYC, one of the first galleries to show contemporary artists using electronic and computer-based mediums. You will find her contact information on the Seek Art site.

Why Art Published by PoetsandArtists Ends Up In So Many Art Collections

I asked Didi Menendez –What brings art collectors to your site? Why have so many purchases been made of artworks published in Poets and Artists? How do you account for this since you are not an online art sales site?

Didi replied–”I attribute the success of the publication to quality versus quantity. I only publish artwork based on my aesthetics and not the mass media. I do not accept advertisers or any other monies because I do not want anyone to dictate what I publish. To me publishing is also an art form. It is a creative outlet for me. I make sure to get the publications in the right hands. I also recently started publishing iARTistas which has a different feel to it.”

iArtistas is an iPAD/digital/print publication.  You will find the submission guidelines by clicking on *Submit* in the top menu on both the PoetsandArtists and the iArtistas sites.

Most of the paintings published by PoetsandArtists are figure studies and portraits– also themes of the Howard Tullman Collection. Take a walk-through with the collector in this YouTube video.

The SUPERNOVA Performance Art Festival is a Rosslyn Arts Project presented by the Rosslyn Business Improvement District (BID) and produced by The Pink Line Project. SUPERNOVA will début June 6‐9, 2013, throughout Rosslyn, Virginia, in raw spaces, office lobbies, rooftops, parks, the Metro station, and other public places. SUPERNOVA will bring together emerging and established local, regional, national and international performance artists to present an expansive range of positions and approaches to performance art. SUPERNOVA is now accepting submissions for this performance art festival! Deadline: Fri Mar 15th, 2013

Multi‐site, multi‐day, transdisciplinary, anti‐conventional, SUPERNOVA will include and not be limited to: performance art, live art, body art, relational art, action art, happenings, actions, interventions, works‐as‐yet‐undefined, and those never‐to‐be defined. Or whatever you want, or refuse, to call it. Selected artists will receive a $250 honorarium, with the opportunity to apply for more funding. Limited housing and accommodations will be available, but not guaranteed. Artists are encouraged to seek individual funding for SUPERNOVA. The deadline to submit entries is 5 p.m., March 15, 2013, and all decisions will be finalized by 9 a.m., April 5, 2013. All submissions and inquiries can be sent to Eames Armstrong, chief curator at eames@pinklineproject.com.

Submissions should be formatted as a single PDF document, which includes:

• Link to artist’s website and online video.
• Resume/CV

In the words of performance artist Guillermo Gómez-‐Peña, “Our job may be to open up a temporary utopian/dystopian space, a de-‐militarized zone in which meaningful ‘radical’ behavior and progressive thought are hopefully allowed to take place, even if only for the duration of the piece. In this imaginary zone, both artist and audience members are given permission to assume multiple and ever changing positionalities and identities. In this border zone, the distance between ‘us’ and ‘them,’ self and other, art and life, becomes blurry and unspecific.” (from In Defense of Performance Art)

Tumblr: From Cave to Canvas + Hyperallergic Tumblr Conference

When Tumblr first came online, visual artists took it up right away and have continued to use the Tumblr platform in interesting and exciting ways–such as the eatsleepdraw project that I reported on last week.

Tumblr is such an exciting mini-blogging tool for artists, with select Tumblr blogs accepting artist submissions their art.  I’ve created a separate category of Tumblr blogs within my Art Magazines and Publications PDF, a gratis list provided by Artist Marketing Resources here.   Cave to Canvas is one Tumblr blog that you will find on our PDF list. Cave to Canvas accepts submissions from artists for features on their Tumblr blog.

And you don’t need to be at tomorrow’s event to take part in the lively discussion that is certainly going to take place. Please join in at anytime using the #tumblrart hashtag on various social media platforms, including Tumblr, Twitter, and Google+.

You can also submit questions via the Hyperallergic tumblelog — hyperallergic.tumblr.com/ask — or via twitter (using #tumblrart hashtag) during the Q&A period during the event.
