South African artist JP Meyer’s current INITIATE exhibition opened earlier this month, and he told me something about his work in an interview which I published in a feature article in Xposy magazine here.
After years of exploring patterns and abstraction, Meyer recently changed direction in pursuit of small monotone and almost photorealistic figure studies. Works in the INITIATE exhibition have minimal backgrounds that dissolve blurred edges of forms and paint layers while maintaining the photographic character of the figures — making them recognizable but with hard to distinguish features– an approach that compliments Meyer’s examination of loss of individuality.
Initiate is the sixth solo gallery exhibition of J. P. Meyer’s career.
