Story and Alt Space: 2 That Combine Art Magazine + Art Gallery + Art Shop

Both Story and Alt Space present interesting concepts based on the combination of magazine, shop and art gallery–perhaps each coming from a different direct.

While Story changes their retail space every 4-6 weeks like an art gallery to focus on a new theme, Alt Space began as a magazine that expanded into a gallery and shop in Brooklyn. These may seem like subtle differences, yet I think visual artists might examine both to stimulate their thinking for new ways to present their work.

Many artists set up a website that acts as an archive for images of their work. Perhaps it’s time to dust things off and rethink such a presentation, making it more dynamic. Regular changes will result in news for their blog, and social media activity, creating plenty to Tweet about and share on other platforms and bringing more visitors to the artist’s website.

Screenshot 2016-01-06 at 10.13.12 PM

They began as a magazine called Alt Citizen. ALT CITIZEN welcomes submissions of any and all content that expands the imagination and creative energy. They’re a community of writers, photographers, thinkers. Please send all music, musings, photos, videos, collages, art and any other thing that you would like considered –Submission details here.

Alt Citizen recently opened a gallery and shop in Brooklyn called Alt Space.  They also have a new online store altspaceshop.com! Featuring some of their favorite artists and designers.

Alt Space has been labeled Revivers of DIY, “where art and fashion seamlessly collide” by Bullett Magazine. They host monthly exhibitions and events to a growing collective of local creatives and consumers alike. Curators include Alt Citizen Editor-in-Chief Nasa Hadizadeh, Style artist Phil Gomez, and Artist Grace Miceli.

Artwork from current and past exhibitions, fashion, and accessories are personally selected by AltSpace curators for the shops. Most items are artist made, limited, and/or exclusive to Alt Space. Stay updated on Alt Space by following on Twitter: @altspacebrooklyn.

Whitechapel Gallery’s First Thursdays: 4th June & 2nd July 2015, 6 – 9 pm

‘ex-ca-vate-site-two’ is a group show in an open call format curated by artist-curator Ismail Erbil that investigates the relationship between finished works and those found in the artist’s studios, thinking of this relationship as a type of excavation.   Re-visiting the studio in a gallery environment Erbil records and reconsiders curatorial relationships and questions the context of the gallery versus the studio revealing often hidden or unseen aspects of an artist’s practice. Displaying a sense of unearthed visions creates unorthodox sites of interaction between artworks, the gallery space and the viewer.  A large structure in the centre of the gallery references Joseph Beuys sculpture work ‘Fat Battery’ 1963 and Meret Oppenheim object 1936.  This investigation at Schwartz Gallery extends from Erbil’s ideas of ‘digging’ for minimalist visions, saturation and construction as a dimension of the artist’s role, questioning the act of erasing and displaying broken artworks.  The viewer will also have the option to be guided by the gallery assistants to link up finished objects with studio objects disrupting their process of engaging with the exhibition and shifting their role into that of active agent in the context of the exhibition as an installation.

TERMS & CONDITIONS:
Artists are encouraged to apply with work that responds to the above ideas of excavation, unearthed visions and the idea of finishes versus the unfinished.

New Art Gallery in the UK Currently Accepting New Artists From the UK and Abroad

blogexhibtionsphoto

This is a great opportunity for contemporary artists.

There is a new art gallery in the UK which considers itself a platform for contemporary art, showcasing the emerging art practice of artists. The gallery creates new opportunities for artists to exhibit their work. The gallery is currently selecting artists from the UK and internationally to join their gallery and collective exhibitions. They are seeking art from artists working in all media. For submissions, they prefer a link to your artist portfolio and a description of your practice sent to them via email.

Since we do not wish to contribute to a flood of submissions, we have added the name of the gallery, and their email address for submissions, to our gallery e-list. Get the gallery e-list here.

imgfave app, a New Art Gallery, and a Call for Proposal Submissions

blogdefmagnifer

In my daily research I’m always on the look out for opportunities for artists. In case you missed these found around the web this week:

The art gallery Haunch of Venison London closed not long ago and now the former gallery directors Ben Tufnell and Matt Watkins are launching a new gallery, Parafin, in Woodstock Street, Mayfair, London in September 2014. Founder of London gallery Master Piper, Nicholas Rhodes will join them on this new venture. The new Parafin will represent emerging artists and internationally established artists.

Find a 261 page list of clickable links to International Art Galleries here.

Deadline for proposal submissions for Project Anywhere 2015 program is September 1, 2014. Proposal guidelines can be found here.

Project Anywhere is an expanded exhibition model encompassing the entire globe in which the role of curator is replaced with a peer review system. Emphasizing art outside conventional exhibition circuits, Project Anywhere specifically promotes the work of artists at the outermost limits of location-specificity.

I added the imagfave free app to my iPad just this morning. imgfave seems to be a great site for sharing your art images large and getting others to share them on Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest.  It’s easy to create a new account on imgfave and immediately upload your art, or try some cross-promotion with artist friends–upload one of their art images and have them upload one of yours.
