Women Behind the Lens Competition Open to Women Worldwide

We recently published about the 50/50 initiatives toward male-female equality in the arts.

PicFair is also actively working toward a greater equality for women photographers with their Women Behind the Lens annual competitions.

PicFair launched the Women Behind the Lens competition in 2017 to highlight the gender imbalance in the commercial photography industries, where just 2% of photographers on the books at major commercial agencies are women, and only 5% of the images used by leading photography publishers are from the lenses of female photographers.

Women can submit to the 2018 Women Behind the Lens competition from August 1st to October 1st, 2018 in four categories: PORTRAIT, NATURE, ARCHITECTURE, STREET LEVEL

(You can also upload up to one thousand of your photographs for sale on the PicFair site at prices you set.)

This competition is open to women worldwide – to enter, sign-up to Picfair, agree to the terms and conditions and start uploading your images. During upload, you will set a price which allows publishers to license your images via Picfair. To choose a category, visit the pic page, select ‘Submit Image’ at the top of the page and choose a category from the pop up.

  1.  Sign up to Picfair (it’s Free) and proceed to the Upload page
  2.  Upload images to Picfair
  3.  Go to the image page and click the ‘Submit Image’ button and select a category.

A neighbor, who runs every morning, mentioned seeing wild turkeys in a certain area. So I took notice while driving one morning and saw seven wild turkeys in a farmer’s field near some woods. Since then I see wild turkeys everywhere–I’ve even had them in my yard. It’s kind of interesting how we notice things the more we start looking for them and are more open to seeing what others point out to us. Many photographers know that the more they look the more they see to photograph.

Master Creator Attributes His Success to Learning How to Submit His Work

I’ve been telling artists for years to submit their work! So I felt validated by a great master when I read this quote–

“Think up ideas for stories, go out and shoot them, and then send them in to the magazines. I was lucky; I figured that out when I was young.” Stanley Kubrick

This great, important and successful filmmaker started out as a photographer and unknown. He got his start by submitting his work and getting it into magazine.

This applies to all artists working in all materials and styles — you should be submitting your work to appropriate art magazines, art consultants, art galleries, interior designers, and art licensing companies.

I wrote and published an e-book guide to help artists make submissions (available here) and e-lists of resources to help artists quickly and easily find the best places submit their work. Great Outdoors: Artist Designs Win Product Line, Enter by June 15th

Bridgeman Studio, Creative Review and Culture Label are sponsoring a competition called The Great Outdoors for artists to win:

Three artists will have their own product line created and sold at Wilderness Festival and on the CultureLabel website here

Grand Prize: a 500 GB Pound commission to design the Wilderness Festival map, distributed to all attendees at the festival in August.

The competition is open until 15th June 2015

• Maximum of 5 entries per artist.
• All images entered into the competition remains 100% copyright of the artist.
• All images can be used in marketing and advertising the competition from Bridgeman and third parties (Creative Review) .
• Entrants must give permission for their names and photographs to be used for publicity.
• The entry can be photography, illustration, digital art or fine art.
• All images must be 100% original copyright owned by the artist and not use any third party copyright material.
• Entries must be supplied as two files, one high-resolution .jpeg sized between 3MB and 5MB, and one low resolution version, sized between 250KB and 500KB
• By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees to these terms and conditions. Entry is open to all artists, of any age, in any country

#artists New Company Launches Site Spring 2015: Art Murals, Art Posters, Art On Canvas

Cannonwalls, a Canada based company, has a website in beta phase where artists can register now here: http://1479-2443.el-alt.com/

Once you register, you will be able to submit thumbnail images of your art and designs. Upon acceptance you will then upload your large files of your images for both high quality poster art and mural size reproduction.

The official launch of Cannonwalls is a few days away. Cannonwalls will be moving their site to cannonwalls.com upon launch, and they are also working on a mobile friendly version of their site.

If you’re an artist or know of any great designers please send them to the Cannonwalls site and have then throw up as many designs as they want, the more the better, monopolize the site…I would. The more designs thrown on Cannonwalls, the better.

The new site will be focusing on peel and stick vinyl decal posters, high quality 2″ thick wrapped canvas prints and huge vinyl peel and stick wall murals to start, (they say they use the same vinyl material as FatHeads ).  Cannonwalls prints on the latest digital presses and literally sell thousands of units on Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, shop.com, shop.ca, etsy…under their J.P. London brand.

They want this to be a fun and lucrative project for artists and hassle free. They recently put a sales module in place so you can follow sales by design including the payment building. That’s key. It’s fully transparent. All sales numbers by type, money and date will be available to artists on their profile 24-7.

High End Art Licensing: Art on Wood Furniture, Wall Panels

If you think of art licensing as wall calendars and greeting cards, then take a look at these high-end wall panels and furniture– featured by the if it’s hip, it’s here design blog–with artist Rex Ray’s designs on them. They’re produced by B + N Industries based in California and New York City. B+N Industries is an innovative designer and manufacturer of products for the retail, architectural and hospitality markets.

Even top New York City art galleries like Bravin Lee and Gagosian have gotten into high-end art licensing with sales in their Gagosian Shop on Madison Avenue of artist pillows, art jewelry, posters, and limited edition  Alexander Calder and Basquiat artworks transferred onto dinner plates. The Gagosian Shop  has nearly sold out of Andy Warhol camouflage designs on wallpaper, and snow skis and skateboards with Keith Haring and Basquiat designs.

Bravin Lee is unique with its Bravin Lee Editions, a series of artist designed hand-knotted limited edition rugs.

Cumulus Studios collection (2008-2013) focuses on outdoor objects that include sculpture editions, textiles and functional art pieces in small editions of 25 and under.

DENY Designs may have #lesserknown artists (about 170) but they have some interesting home decor accessories in Bed and Bath and a Pet Collection of pet beds, food bowls, and bandanas.

Opportunities for #Artists wishing to break into the Asian market

Artists around the world regularly contact Artist Marketing Resources for details on getting their work into the growing Asian art market. Often these artists target Tokyo Japan as their point of entry. There are other cities to consider–Singapore, Manila, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei and Seoul.

Dot.N is a Seoul, Republic of Korea (aka South Korea) based online gallery and arts project planning site scheduled to launch on April 1st 2015.

They’ve invited more than 5000 artists internationally to register on the Dot.N site on April 1st and upload their art images.

Jeonghyun Lee of the Dot.N Arts Planning company said, ” Up to this point, the system looks similar to existing sites such as Behance.” Dot.N wants to establish an “artists’ online archive on a grand scale.”

When artists all over the world sign-up to the Dot.N website, they will be exhibiting and sharing their artworks with art collectors and the art buying public, as well as business enterprises, banks, hospitals, advertising agencies and web agencies who will have options to buy and use (license) artists’ digital art images. This is one way Dot.N will generate additional income for their artists.

The Dot.N Arts Planning company will advertise and promote the availability of both the digital images and the original artworks on their new site.

If you are an artist thinking of selling t-shirts printed with your art, you can expand that even further.

The Print All Over site offers high-end blanks for you to print your art on as bespoke/commission-ed items for your buyers. Print All Over offers all the usuals (dresses, bandanas etc) as well as kimonos, rain coats, robes, ghost costumes, and Bomber jackets.

On the Rage On site you can sell your art printed on items such as aprons, backpacks, shower-curtains, swimwear, beach towels, hoodies, sweatpants, sweatshirts, onesies, leggings, tank tops, bandanas, dresses, underwear, sandals, pillows, yoga mats and other items. Artists: Would You Want Your Art Printed on Condoms?

We always have an eye out for new ways manufacturers use art printed on their products and this one stood out (or up?) as hard to miss (pun intended). A site new to us–that we discovered when they began following us on Twitter– the Bounty Hunter offers up contests and competitions. While the winner of the art printed on condoms prize will get $1000 US Dollars, artists may wish to think through such contests. Is this art on condoms project a one-off novelty or a new trend? Will art on condoms become standard, much like art on skateboards? If soon all condoms will have art printed on them, then an art licensing royalty contract could net any artist much more than the prize amount. Or perhaps winning the prize would be a good start?

If you decide that you’d rather have an art licensing contract and receive regular royalty payments, then how do you go about finding those companies that license art from artists?
