STUDIO CLEARANCE SALES

Many visual artists produce a lot of work in their studios as they develop and grow their art making practice. Soon, there may be a storage problem in their workspace. A time comes–perhaps during the summer months– when artists want to sell off a lot of transitional work. They may need to make more room in their studio and realize that selling off earlier pieces will likely provide additional money for replenishing their art materials and art making supplies.  Or perhaps the artist is planning on relocating to another workspace or renovating their current studio and the prospect of moving years of accumulated and stored artworks is overwhelming–so they would rather sell the art pieces than move them into another storage area. Psychologically, it may be freeing for an artist to sell off older work as they move forward with their style.

There are many reasons for any artist to want to offer certain of their artworks for quick sale outside the gallery system.

Open Studio sales have been underway annually for decades before any online galleries even existed. Open Studios provide a way for artists to sell their art from their studio–the major drawback being that these sales are usually annual or bi-annual and occur only over one weekend. Artists continue to need to sell artworks quickly and easily in ways that do not monopolize blocks of their time–time they could be at work on their art making.

ONLINE YEAR-ROUND STUDIO SALES

If you are an artist and need to make lots of quick art sales, for whatever reason, one site to consider is Chairish. Initially, I was invited to sell on Chairish and as a test I uploaded about a dozen paintings. So far I’ve sold 6 –paintings I needed to sell to create space.  I was glad to sell to buyers on Chairish who appreciate my art. I’m glad to have removed those pieces from storage. It’s nice to know that these artworks are now seeing the light of day and enjoyed by others.

YOU HAVE WHAT CHAIRISH BUYERS ARE LOOKING FOR

Chairish buyers appreciate high quality design items, collectables, one-of-a-kind artworks, and limited edition pieces. One of my buyers, an Interior Designer, purchased one of my paintings for a client. We were able to have a dialog via messaging on the Chairish site. Other buyers bought my paintings to decorate their homes and apartments. My buyers are also my followers on the Chairish site and receive notifications when I add new work for sale or lower my asking price on any of their favorite artworks.

MULTIPLE ART SHIPPING OPTIONS

I know that shipping is always an issue for artists. Chairish has that covered by offering some helpful services to artists for shipping their art to buyers.

WHITE GLOVE SERVICE

First, Chairish offers White Glove service. If you have a large and valuable artwork selling on Chairish you can choose to use their White Glove service which is paid for by the buyer. With White Glove, Chairish will send art handlers to remove the artwork from your studio and hand-deliver it to your buyer.

PAID BY CHAIRISH

Another useful shipping option an artist can elect to use is the paid by Chairish Pre-paid UPS shipping label option. With this option, a pre-paid shipping label is generated for your sold artwork. Then all you need to do is print the shipping label and apply it to the package containing the artwork. You can then take your package to any UPS shipping center –which may be your local Staples store–where they scan the label and hold the package for pickup the same day. Three days later your art is delivered to your buyer. Within about seven days your payment is in your PayPal account.

Local Hand-Delivery

The 3rd shipping option available on Chairish is for the artist to pay the shipping cost on the item or charge a fee to the buyer. This option allows for you to hand-deliver your sold art piece– within a selected mile radius– for a flat fee. So if you live in a large city, you can offer to bring the art to the buyer’s home, office, or meet-up for coffee and deliver their latest purchase to them personally. Or, perhaps you know someone who will make these deliveries for you while you continue your studio work.

Each item you sell on Chairish can have any one of these shipping options selected and applied. There is no need for consistency of shipping options across your Chairish store, as on other online sales platforms.

PRICING OPTIONS AND BUYER OFFERS

Also, I like the pricing options on Chairish. For each of your artworks offered for sale, you can feature the retail price, your sale price, and add a reserve price for when a buyer makes an offer. These features help to increase your sales. Buyers are always looking for bargains and so having the option to make an offer is very appealing! They are interacting with you when they make you an offer that is a little lower than your asking price. You then have the option of entering a counter-offer or of accepting their offer for your artwork.

Now that I’ve found this viable way to make lots of quick sales I plan to add many more of my paintings to the Chairish site and get them out of storage! This may be a working option for you too.

Hunter Collector a New Online Auction Platform

We like new–new ideas, new sites, new ways to get visibility and make sales. Hunter Collector is so new that we know nothing about it. The site hasn’t even launched yet. Could this be an alternative to ebay? A platform to reach serious collectors? Hunter Collector is describing itself an “exciting Online Auction platform for serious collectors.”  We are assuming that fine art fits into that description.

Video: Artist Metrov Responds to Curators Request to See His Process

California artist Metrov demonstrates his skills as an artist, film editor and filmmaker in his “Making Of” documentary video A Study in Body/Psyche Ratios. Below:(runtime: 7 minutes).

Metrov wrote this introduction to his video–

“Last year, I made a (30) minute documentary video about my life in the arts. Though it was well-received, I had a few curators tell me they are mostly interested in the artist’s “Process.” I also got a fair amount of feedback suggesting the video should be shorter. This new video is (7) minutes and focuses solely on “the Process.” Since I’m an experienced filmmaker and editor, it was relatively fun and easy to produce this kind of presentation. I believe the video should help viewers more deeply understand and identify with the work. However, I’m not inclined to write much about it as it should speak for itself. Anyone is welcome to contact me should they want more info.”

Metrov: Commission A Portrait to Rival #AndyWarhol

Born in Los Angeles and schooled in art at UCLA, Metrov began his career in New York City doing illustrations for major publishers such as MacMillan, McGraw-Hill, New York Magazine, and ultimately Push Pin Studios, the only graphic designers to ever exhibit in the Paris Louvre. He eventually segued into Fine Art painting after studying with Prix di Rome scholar, Gilbert Stone. Metrov began doing portraits of celebrities and international socialites. He quickly became renowned for his uncanny ability to capture his subject’s “spiritual essence.” “It’s not something I try to do, it’s simply what comes naturally. Some have called it a psychic ability,” says Metrov, now living and working in Santa Barbara, California, America’s  “Côte d’Azur.”

When Margaux Hemingway saw her finished portrait, she couldn’t stop crying for an hour. Ben Vereen stood speechless before his likeness. Mick Jagger hired Metrov to paint his wife, Bianca. Metrov began competing with his neighbor, Andy Warhol, as portraitist of New York’s elite high society. Growing restless, however, with static artwork, Metrov became fascinated by the potential of motion pictures to be “paintings that moved and made sound.”

After spending many years in the motion picture business, Metrov once again began accepting portrait commissions in 2012. His style has evolved over time, but his art, whether digital (as seen  below) or photographic with synthetic polymers, continues to reflect his subject’s inner nature as well as their common human struggle to balance the often chaotic energies around them.

Metrov was recently invited to conduct a public portrait session at the Santa Barbara Museum of Contemporary Art as part of Marinella Senatore’s, highly acclaimed “Building Communities” exhibition. The artist-run A-side B-side Gallery  was founded in late 2011 by Tinsel Edwards and Catherine Magnani.  The gallery, project space, and studios are located on the Village Green within the Hackney Downs Studios creative community in east London, UK. A-side B-side Gallery is dedicated to being an all-inclusive exhibition space– promoting artists from all backgrounds and stages of their careers and inviting a diverse audience to visit their gallery to view the work.

As well as celestial inspirations, such as his first viewing of the Southern Cross in Key West Florida from a boat on night waters. And again, seeing the Southern Cross constellation years later, on a trip to Tahiti in the South Pacific– where it is much more clearly visible in the night sky from the secluded atolls of Polynesia.

Tagging your Art Images On Instagram to Attract Art Buyers

I first used Instagram at the new Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland a couple of years ago, where I snapped photos of the art on the walls using my iPad camera and sent them off to my Instagram account using the museum’s WiFi (I had to ask for their password).  I thought I’d taken the time to type in the name of each artist in each photo description. Reviewing those images now (here) on my Instagram profile, I  notice blurry shots not edited out and abbreviated artist names. My picture-taking activity bundled up in my excitement of walking the galleries and viewing the art. It never occurred to me to take the time to add image tags to any of those photos. Likewise, at the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, where the huge galleries held much more and much larger artworks, I snapped and sent my photos to Instagram without tagging them.

Today, viewing Instagram images posted by others, I’ve notice their use of image tags, such as the place tags #ArtBasel #ScopeArtFair used by those in Miami and #Brighton #thingstodoinBrighton and #openstudios used by artist Caia Matheson in the UK.

Instagram allows up to 30 tags per image. Amid the many image tags used to describe the art medium or technique, artists also tag to get the attention of buyers, with:  #affordableart #artbuyers #artcollectors #buyart #artforsale #paintingforsale #printforsale #onlineshop #interiordesign #giftideas #handpainted #Christmasgiftideas #sellart #artsales

Taking more interest in Instagram and tagging, I noticed an article by Brandon Gaille, on 6 Keys to Getting more Instagram Likes, and learned that Facebook owns Instagram. According to Gaille, “Instagram is the hottest site right now. It was experiencing phenomenal growth when Facebook acquired the site and even thereafter the growth spree seems to be unhindered.”

Group Pinterest Boards: Art Direct From Artists, Abstract Art Direct From Artists, Art Realism

Last September, I set up the group Pinterest board Art Direct From Artists, a collection of artworks available for purchase directly from each artist represented on the board. What’s unique about this group board is that I am inviting artists to pin their art with retail price tags on each image.

That board was so popular that I also created the group boards Abstract Art Direct From Artists and  Art Direct From Artists-Realism to help categorize the available art.

Recently, I received feedback from one of the artist who has his artwork images pinned to the group boards, Leon Sarantos who wrote:
