Portraits Africa announces their first exhibition of artworks from their community of artists to take place in Nairobi, Kenya, Thursday, 21st January to Friday, 5th February 2016.

Participating artists include Anita Kavochi, Anne Mwairi, Christopher Kiongah, David Thuku, Elias Mung’ora, Elijah Mutua, Jack Birgen, Jay Kimathi, Nadia Wamunya, Nduata Kariuki, Nicholas Odhiambo, Peteros Ndunde, Seth Odhiambo, Sylvenus Semoh, Victor Binge, and, Waweru Gichuhi.

South African Artist Lynette Swanepoel Talks About the Controversial Initiation Ritual Depicted In Her Portrait Art

I recently chatted with South African artist Lynette Swanepoel about her portrait art. Lynette lives about three hours from Johannesburg, on Libanon Farm next to Libanon Mountain which is close to a small town named Bethelhem–“so it almost sounds as if I am in the Middle East, but I’m not. I’m in the middle of South Africa,” she says. Lynette farms dairy cattle with her family and they also have Arabian horses, and plant maize and wheat. Before farming Lynette taught Graphic design at a University for many years. “I wish I had time to just do art, but the farm takes up some time and I also teach visual art at local schools as well as digital photography.”

Since she is in rural Africa, I asked Lynette if she encountered wild animals on her farm. She said, “There are some bucks here, but no, no wild animals, except the occasional jackal or wild cat.”

Depending on where you live, that may seem a bit on the wild side! I also asked her if there were villages nearby. Lynette told me that there are many villages all around her, and that the young man in her portrait(above), “is a South African but from the South Sotho tribe which originated in Kingdom of Lesotho our neighbouring country right in middle of South Africa. We stay near the border. It is also known as the Mountain Kingdom.”

As we continued our chat, I found out that Lynette is fascinated by both the ceremony and the juxtaposition of the ancient elements of the ritual and the contemporary elements–as in her painting Initiation, the young man’s mirrored shades and cap contrast with beaded headgear and traditional blanket that he wears.
She said, “Yes, that is what I liked most is how the indigenous culture was mixed with the Western influences. Also it shows that the indigenous culture is fading and slowly being replaced by “cheap” probably Eastern imports of plastics instead of the pride there once was in handmade artifacts. In the reflection of his glasses (in her portrait painting at top) you can also see he is standing on a skin of an animal that was slaughtered for the occasion (full view of figures in photo above).” Lynette said that she wasn’t sure what animals were sacrificed, but perhaps “a deer and a Blesbuck. They also get a wooden weapon called a “knopkierie” long stick with rounded head and beaded decoration to carry with them to signify that they have completed the ritual initiation. The stick is something they can carry with them from then on, I think it has been carried over from history when young men could then be warriors and were old enough to fight. The blanket, with a pin to hold it together, comes from their Bashoto culture and Lesotho the mountain kingdom is close to us and because it can get very cold here the blanket is often part of dress. They come in an array of colours and designs. Even the King of Lesotho will dress in a traditional blanket on occasions.”

Lynette explained the details in her pastel painting titled Initiation–“Yes. We had to get special permission to attend the final day when they are washed from the clay that covered them and they are dressed in traditional Bashoto blanket. We could attend the end to take some photos. This particular boy (I know him) looked traumatized and not very comfortable. He must have endured quite a lot.”

The next logical question to ask is–What is the young man in your portrait being initiated into?

Lynette says that the “Initiation is part of many African cultures and this particular boy belongs to the Sotho culture. The initiation leads to or gives them their ‘passage’ into manhood. In these tribes it is part of becoming a man. There is however also a lot of controversy around the whole ritual and process.”

What is the controversy?
Lynette explained that the initiation ritual takes places over several days in camps specially set up to complete the ritual– “These camps are makeshift tents in the bush, with little to eat, no contact with family and the rest “teaching ” them to be men. One can only guess what it all entails as they are not allowed to speak about it. Many boys have died in these camps. The rituals are kept secret. Nobody is allowed to visit these rituals while it is being conducted. One of the things is that the boys get circumcised during this time and this is where things often go wrong.”
I asked Lynette is her portrait Initiation is part of a series?
She replied–“I did only one on initiation but plan on taking some more photos on the same ritual on the girl’s side and add that. I try to portray more of the emotion and spirit of the person. Try and get the viewer to almost understand who they are as person.”

Of her process, Lynette says, “The reason I am using pastel is that I like drawing and do some oil painting as well, and coloured pastel to me is like the two in one– painting and drawing simultaneously. It also allows me to create realism without it being too formal but using more of an “impressionistic ” technique where colour is mixed optically. I had to import pastels from the UK because it was difficult to find here. Have not yet tried to make them. I use Rembrandt pastels at the moment.”

Video: Artist Metrov Responds to Curators Request to See His Process

California artist Metrov demonstrates his skills as an artist, film editor and filmmaker in his “Making Of” documentary video A Study in Body/Psyche Ratios. Below:(runtime: 7 minutes).

Metrov wrote this introduction to his video–

“Last year, I made a (30) minute documentary video about my life in the arts. Though it was well-received, I had a few curators tell me they are mostly interested in the artist’s “Process.” I also got a fair amount of feedback suggesting the video should be shorter. This new video is (7) minutes and focuses solely on “the Process.” Since I’m an experienced filmmaker and editor, it was relatively fun and easy to produce this kind of presentation. I believe the video should help viewers more deeply understand and identify with the work. However, I’m not inclined to write much about it as it should speak for itself. Anyone is welcome to contact me should they want more info.”

Metrov: Commission A Portrait to Rival #AndyWarhol

Born in Los Angeles and schooled in art at UCLA, Metrov began his career in New York City doing illustrations for major publishers such as MacMillan, McGraw-Hill, New York Magazine, and ultimately Push Pin Studios, the only graphic designers to ever exhibit in the Paris Louvre. He eventually segued into Fine Art painting after studying with Prix di Rome scholar, Gilbert Stone. Metrov began doing portraits of celebrities and international socialites. He quickly became renowned for his uncanny ability to capture his subject’s “spiritual essence.” “It’s not something I try to do, it’s simply what comes naturally. Some have called it a psychic ability,” says Metrov, now living and working in Santa Barbara, California, America’s  “Côte d’Azur.”

When Margaux Hemingway saw her finished portrait, she couldn’t stop crying for an hour. Ben Vereen stood speechless before his likeness. Mick Jagger hired Metrov to paint his wife, Bianca. Metrov began competing with his neighbor, Andy Warhol, as portraitist of New York’s elite high society. Growing restless, however, with static artwork, Metrov became fascinated by the potential of motion pictures to be “paintings that moved and made sound.”

After spending many years in the motion picture business, Metrov once again began accepting portrait commissions in 2012. His style has evolved over time, but his art, whether digital (as seen  below) or photographic with synthetic polymers, continues to reflect his subject’s inner nature as well as their common human struggle to balance the often chaotic energies around them.

Metrov was recently invited to conduct a public portrait session at the Santa Barbara Museum of Contemporary Art as part of Marinella Senatore’s, highly acclaimed “Building Communities” exhibition. Studio Visit Site for Making Reservations to Visit Artist Studios

We took a few days off during the Christmas holiday week and now we’re back to share the really great Studio Visit site that artists and collectors will want to know about. It’s an artist studio reservation service that is provided completely free to artists and collectors.

Studio Visit is a website for collectors to make reservations to visit artist studios searchable by city and country. So far, the main studio locations listed are cities in Germany, Spain, Mexico, Belgium and the Netherlands. Once you add your studio location your city will appear in the available locations.

Artists simply register with their studio address, name, and at least one picture of their studio. Artist/studios can add up to ten pictures of their studio space, up to ten images of their artwork, a Google map view, artist CV/Statement and other menu options.

The Studio Visit website provides a booking system. Through this system potential buyers and collectors will request a studio visit only on the days, times, and for the duration that the artist or studio configures. The booking system will ask for basic contact information from the collector that will be seen only by the artist/ studio they request to visit.

Once a collector books a studio visit reservation the studio will receive an email. In the studio account menu option RESERVATION MANAGE the reservation booking can be approved or rejected. If approved the collector will receive an email and can only go ahead with the studio visit appointment with this confirmation email.

A London-based group of five young curators studying MA Curating at the Contemporary at London Metropolitan University in partnership with the Whitechapel Gallery are inviting artists to submit works for an exhibition to take place on the 13th – 27th March 2015 at The Bank Space Gallery in London.The show will mainly focus on the idea of “screen” and how it influences our everyday experience of and approach to the world.Since the screen became portable, this unavoidable tool mediates almost every interaction with external reality.  Within a world of flat images, we handle and caress screens rather than touch objects, we text instead of talk and we browse instead of ask.

Open to all artists working with any media, this exhibition intends to explore our relationship with the “screen” and the impact it has on our everyday life. You are invited to investigate this “black mirror” as a contemporary, challenging and engaging concept and to go beyond the surface.

The deadline for submissions is Sunday 11th January 2015 at 12pm.  The Feminist Art Project (TFAP), now in its ninth year of successfully shining a spotlight on feminist art and its impact on art and culture worldwide, announces the schedule for a special symposium at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York City. With an impressive list of participants, The Feminist Art Project will present a diverse set of panels that will be of interest to anyone curious about contemporary art and ideas. The 2015 Day of Panels will take place on Saturday, February 14 from 9am – 5pm at MAD. The panels, entitled Collective Creativity: Collaboration and Collectives in Feminist Art Practice, are organized by Damali Abrams, Artist; Jenn Dierdorf, Artist, Co-Director of the Fellowship Program and Development, A.I.R. Gallery; Kathleen Wentrack, Art historian, City University of NY,Queensborough. The symposium will focus on Collaborative working methodologies and how women’s collectives have been crucial to feminist art practice since the 1970s. As feminist practice continues to evolve, collaboration and collectivity continue to provide an alternative to the patriarchal ideal of individualism.
