Artist Linda Coppens, divides her time between Belgium and Spain.  Educated as a psychologist, she says that those interests led to the development of her artistic theme: “the complexity of the human being and the influence of our past experiences on our current experiences.”

Linda says that by drawing upon her training as a psychologist–” I incorporate into my work a variety of ideas, infusing it with another range of textures beyond the pictorial. This gives it a more open-ended character that invites the viewer to appreciate it in her/his own way.”

Linda refers to herself as a versatile painter and enjoys working in acrylics but also in oil and cold wax. “I discovered that the oil and cold wax with its soft, transparent consistency is an ideal material for expressing the layered nature of memory, our past experiences. Every experience is coloured by the foregoing. The transparent or opaque layers in my work refer to these experiences. Each layer shows signs of previous layers and includes pieces of life that are trapped inside. Sometimes these traces and pieces of life come to the surface and determine how the surface looks like, sometimes they stay hidden underneath but there always remain traces.”

When working with a brush, Linda Coppen’s lines become broader strokes, as in her painting series Relations, of which the artist says, “forms, shapes, color and lines in several layers represent the exchange within human relationships.”

BRAVE NEW, OLD WORLDS

A Solo Exhibition of paintings from Gabriella Cleuren’s  BRAVE NEW, OLD WORLDS series.

From 29/08/2013 until 22/09/2013

Church Sint-Nicolaas, Apostelplein 9100 Sint-Niklaas Belgium

Through my fascination with the work of Goya, who expressed his criticism in his etchings and Black Paintings about his contemporaries, memories, testimonies of the war between Spain and France in the 18th and 19th centuries and the 19th century spirit of intolerance, I detect parallels with my time. Two hundred years later, the human condition has barely improved. War is pervasive and spreads across our planet like a wildfire with terrible consequences. Like biblical catastrophes, mankind destroys his environment, his habitat, his existence, his fellow man. One only needs to collect news images to reinforce this vision on which this installation of my paintings has been assembled.

My limited edition book contains images of many of my paintings that are not on display in this exhibition. The book contains an essay on my Brave New Old Worlds series of paintings written by Bart Vandenabeele, Professor of Aesthetics and Philosophy at Ghent University. The content–durable images that introduce an important aspect of our era, the 21st century.

“In art, the first step is interpretation, or a total transformation, meaning an indoctrination or transformation by the mind. During this process, unconscious elements creep into the work that give it its appeal and inner layeredness, ” says prolific painter Gabriella Cleuren.

Examples of her paintings, in this blog post, show just a tiny part of her extensive subject matter or “worlds” of stunning color and textural brushwork. You may view many more paintings in the art worlds of Gabriella Cleuren on the artist’s website — http://www.gabycleuren.com
