Submissions Open for Unsolicited Exhibition Proposals NYC

Unsolicited Proposal Program

Submissions open: October 131, 2015

apexart
291 Church Street
New York, NY 10013

www.apexart.org

We’ve known about apexart for several years now, and so when we received this opportunity in an email we thought it would be great to share with artists in case they may have missed it—

apexart has developed an Unsolicited Proposal Program, which is a democratic method of selecting exhibitions based on the strength of the idea alone. No CVs, references, or biographical materials are accepted– just 500 words on your brilliant idea for an exhibition in New York. They’ve been doing this for 18 years now!

This year, from October 131, apexart will accept proposals for exhibition ideas. Applications consist of a short written text explaining what the exhibition would be about and why it is of interest.

apexart assembles a jury of 150 people from all different backgrounds, all around the world, who vote on proposals online. This is to make sure that the shows have a broad audience and appeal across cultural borders. The only information jurors can see is the application text; they do not know who submitted the idea and nothing about their background or level of experience. Each proposal is voted on the same number of times by different jurors over the course of a month. apexart developed a custom-made computer script that aggregates all the votes and determines which three proposals have the highest scores. These proposals will be presented as part of apexart’s exhibition season in 2016–17.

Winners receive a budget, curatorial honorarium, and administrative support to mount their exhibitions in the apexart in Manhattan.

You need: a great idea for an exhibition that includes the work of at least 3 artists.
You don’t need: previous curatorial experience, connections at apexart or other organizations, bribes, or a home address in New York City.

Art Galleries Accepting Artist Submissions: AD Projects New York City

Early in 2014, AMOS ENO Gallery located in the Bushwick community of New York, presented an exhibition opportunity with an open call for artists to participate in PAST / FORWARD, an exhibition celebrating Amos Eno Gallery’s 40 years of operation. The call has closed and all works have been selected from the entries submitted. PAST / FORWARD will be on view in Amos Eno’s new home at The Loom until March 1, 2014.

Within the past five years, the resurgence of alternative artist spaces, particularly in the borough of Brooklyn, New York, has drawn the attention of the international art world.

Just one of many art galleries and art exhibition projects that are currently accepting submissions from artists, AD Projects is an independent curatorial enterprise supporting the work of emerging and mid-career artists.

Artist Marketing Resources offers a list of hundreds art galleries currently accepting submissions, in PDF format—gain access to the resource list here.

Artist Submissions — AD Projects would like to learn about new work by emerging artists. If you are an artist and would like your work reviewed, please follow the submission guidelines below.

All submissions should include:

▪ cover letter

▪ biography and/or resume

▪ artist statement (up to two typed pages)

▪ articles related to work (up to three reviews/press clippings)

▪ representation of work in jpeg format

Please email your materials to info@adprojects.org

Space Submissions AD Projects’ mission—to mount fresh work by emerging artists in raw, vacant or temporary spaces—places it within a widening movement that has gathered momentum in New York. Several other groups have formed to take advantage of the vast walled-in emptiness that is the result of the real estate bust. AD Projects’ peers include No Longer Empty, SmartSpaces and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
In the interest of reviving the tradition of alternative exhibition sites, AD Projects is always seeking vacant spaces to invigorate with contemporary art. Should you have details for available real estate, please email info@adprojects.org.
