This Artist Took Our Tagging Advice: Feedback and Dramatic Results on Instagram!

Screen Shot 2015-03-24 at 6.13.38 PM

This week Sean Earley wrote an article on the dramatic results he achieved over a 24 hours period after adding “more targeted hashtags on Instagram.” Sean is a Digital Marketing Consultant at Digital Artist Marketing and an artist who creates vintage Pin-Up art. You can view some of his work on his Instagram profile here.

Normally, when Sean added his art images to Instagram, he’d tag each with #pinup #pinupart and #retro, to routinely get a couple of likes.

After reading our article, Get Your Art Showcased and Featured in Instagram Galleries, and taking our advice, he tried updating his previous Instagram art images by adding new hashtags to help him reach out to art buyers– such as: #homedecor #interiordesign #decorating #officedecor and others.

Sean Earley noted that within 24 hours of adding these hashtags to his art images, he received 92 likes, 7 new followers and 2 mailing list sign ups. This is a great start and he has new Instagram notifications still coming in.

If you are looking for many more ways to increase your visibility by getting your art viewed on social media platforms and featured in fine art magazines, on art blogs, listed  in art directories, on art TV, then get our  e-list of art publication resources for artists here and here.

Wellspring of Life the story and inspiration, by Randy Marmet’–
“We float over a sea of tumultuous energy, right through a barrier of fluid dynamics into a dimension of transcendence where creativity is born in synaptic interaction.  If you could peer into the depths of the creative process, this is where you would find a pulsating liquid nuclei that refuses to be subdued into shape or form and is similar to where life began.  My inspiration came from a deep water dive off the coast of Florida where tropical life was teeming in and around a barrier reef with such energy that it made me feel like I had discovered the secret to the source of life itself.  This sacred place spoke to me in a whisper as I was sworn to secrecy because of it’s fragility.  I cannot return to that place, but I can show you how it felt.”

OAC Gallery Curated Affordable Art Site

blogOAC-logo-x

OAC Gallery is a curated art sales site of painting, photography, mixed media, printmaking, sculpture, and works on paper. OAC Gallery is small and selective. Their curators feel that a well-curated site strengthens artists online presence, helping them sell more work. They work with each artist to carefully select affordable pieces from their portfolios that appeal to their core audience, and, in turn,  engage buyers more powerfully. OAC Gallery has no exclusivity clause. They want artists to succeed and affiliate with as many galleries as possible.

Tagging your Art Images On Instagram to Attract Art Buyers

Screen Shot 2014-12-07 at 8.06.34 AM

I first used Instagram at the new Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland a couple of years ago, where I snapped photos of the art on the walls using my iPad camera and sent them off to my Instagram account using the museum’s WiFi (I had to ask for their password).  I thought I’d taken the time to type in the name of each artist in each photo description. Reviewing those images now (here) on my Instagram profile, I  notice blurry shots not edited out and abbreviated artist names. My picture-taking activity bundled up in my excitement of walking the galleries and viewing the art. It never occurred to me to take the time to add image tags to any of those photos. Likewise, at the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, where the huge galleries held much more and much larger artworks, I snapped and sent my photos to Instagram without tagging them.

Today, viewing Instagram images posted by others, I’ve notice their use of image tags, such as the place tags #ArtBasel #ScopeArtFair used by those in Miami and #Brighton #thingstodoinBrighton and #openstudios used by artist Caia Matheson in the UK.

Screen Shot 2014-12-07 at 8.12.54 AM

Instagram allows up to 30 tags per image. Amid the many image tags used to describe the art medium or technique, artists also tag to get the attention of buyers, with:  #affordableart #artbuyers #artcollectors #buyart #artforsale #paintingforsale #printforsale #onlineshop #interiordesign #giftideas #handpainted #Christmasgiftideas #sellart #artsales

Taking more interest in Instagram and tagging, I noticed an article by Brandon Gaille, on 6 Keys to Getting more Instagram Likes, and learned that Facebook owns Instagram. According to Gaille, “Instagram is the hottest site right now. It was experiencing phenomenal growth when Facebook acquired the site and even thereafter the growth spree seems to be unhindered.”

I also want to share Dan Zarella of HubSpot’s huge infographic on how using more tags on your Instagram photos gets you more likes:

Two Artist Resources that Defy Categorization: Works.io and Art360 Gallery

From first view, the Art365 Gallery website has the look of an online art magazine, IMO. Although they refer to themselves as both an online art gallery and an art blog. You’ll find Featured Artists, Galleries, Glass Artists, and Art News.

Visual artists and glass artists are invited to submit for a permanent spot on this site.

– Send  a text in 300-500 characters about you, your artworks and perhaps a few words about your art technique.

– A link to your website/Facebook page.

– 6-8 quality images of your art.

They will rewrite a unique text about you and your art, show the best of your artworks and link to your website and Facebook fan page from their art blog (it’s a 100% free service). You’ll find the full details on their website.

Works.io is a sophisticated artist driven platform with a professional portfolio and CV tool for emerging fine artists to create online visibility.

Works.io is something like an artist directory, yet, when artists sign up for free they have a dashboard allowing them to add images of their art, their exhibition news, and more. Works.io also offers a monthly selection of emerging artists with more extensive text about each artist showcased. Works.io selects sophisticated art in low-key tones for their feature.

These relatively new sites have been added to our 57 page e-list of art magazines, blogs, and artist directories.

Salon-Style Wall-Hang VS Salon-Style Contemporary Art Gallery

Apartment Therapy salon style room

Apartment Therapy salon style room

According to an article on the Urban Domesticity blog, “hanging artwork salon-style entails arranging a whole bunch of pictures and paintings together in a collage-like formation on the wall.”

This “old-fashioned” method of hanging art dates back to The Paris Salon (French: Salon de Paris), the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. Between 1748 and 1890 The Paris Salon was the greatest annual or biannual art event in the Western world according to Wikipedia.

A salon-style gallery hang at the Milwaukee Art Museum

A salon-style gallery hang at the Milwaukee Art Museum

While this salon-style of hanging art has made a comeback with Interior Designers, which is good news for artists who will be able to offer even more artworks to residential clients to fill salon-hung walls, the term “salon style” may refer to location and relaxed atmosphere when it comes to contemporary art galleries.

Susan Eley Fine Art was founded as a salon-style gallery in an Upper West Side Townhouse in Manhattan, New York, to offer an intimate, personal viewing experience not typically found in white box galleries. Eley opened her Gallery to tap into an untapped audience and to show them an alternative way to enjoy art. She focuses on contemporary art by emerging and mid-career artists working in both figurative and abstract styles in a variety of media and presents their work in solo and group exhibitions showcasing artists from the U.S., Asia, Latin America and Europe.

Artist Marketing Resources has been researching art galleries for many years, and offers artists a chance to share at that research by purchasing the International Art Gallery Directory here.

Some artists have had gallerist contact them right away after receiving our e-postcards!  We also share artist’s e-postcards on Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook and on our blog so that they appear in our newsfeed in the ArtWorld app.

Each time we send out a set of e-postcards, we include the clickable link to the artist’s website so that the recipient may view more of the artist’s work.

We’ll be sharing more of these, but for now, here is a sampling of some of our artist e-postcards–
