Feature Articles on Artists: How To Get Your Art Featured

blogCreativebutton

Artist Marketing Resources announced the launch of the new ArtWorld Community magazine last week, with Marie Kazalia and Keith McFarlane as co-editors. The first week, both Keith and I have received requests from several artists wishing to be featured in articles.

With all the interest, I’ve begun looking at articles I’ve written on artists and published 3 and 4 years ago–many published in the Yahoo! contributor network, by Technorati News, and on the VASA New York blog, as well as this blog.  One of these early articles I wrote on  R. WEIS – titled Compositions of Manipulated Sound ( read it here) with the artist sending me his sound art CDs so that I could listen to his work. I don’t recall which came first, but I wrote a second article on a Cleveland based Artist Who Uses Sound Chris Kulcar here, with lots of videos of this young artist’s performances included in the article.

My article on painter Chris Osborne’s  Stars and Cars series, including Jimi Hendrix with His Corvette Stingray, Paul Newman with His Racing Datsun, Steve McQueen and the Bullit Mustang here, brought interest due to the subject matter of vintage cars and celebrities depicted in the paintings.

I also wrote a timely article on the efforts of the Artist Power Bank in Tokyo along with American artist Alicia Bay Laurel’s Fund-Raising for Japan’s earthquake disaster relief here. Alicia Bay Laurel’s success goes back to the 1960’s with the publication of her artist book still in print and available today and popular in Japan.

When I wrote my article on Canadian Artist in Scotland – Trevor Jones here, I learned about his research into color and sound theory and his use of music in his art. (Trevor also sent me two of his drawings as gifts!).

I wrote and published the first article on photographic artist Ventiko (here) who has since been feature in print in Interview Magazine!  Ventiko is an extraordinary photographic artist who creates images that look like Renaissance oil paintings.

These are just a select few early articles on artists featured on Artist Marketing Resources. At least one of these artists recently contacted me requesting that I write a new article on his latest work for the ArtWorld Community magazine.

As editor, I am seeking complete articles with images, ready to publish. As feature writer, I offer options to artists here.

More recently, Artist Marketing Resources has featured articles on a wide variety of painters, from Paul Rooms in New York, to Texas cowboy artist J.R. Smith, as well as Jay Burton’s sensual photographic art (here)– just to name a few.

View images of J.R. Smith’s paintings above and below and in our sidebar gallery and you will notice that the painter creates a balance in each work that makes it all look so easy. Yet notice again how skillfully the artist incorporates a wide variety of subject matter into each composition in a balancing act that may include animal life, landscapes and plant life, human subjects, architectural features, and still life objects, as well as text and abstract elements.

J.R. Smith has completed numerous commissions on both interior walls and exterior walls of buildings in several Texas and New Mexico towns. National and international art collectors purchase watercolor paintings and painted canvases and panels from the versatile and prolific artist.

J.R. Smith says, ” I would like to reach designers that are decorating lobbies, entryways and restaurants, etc. I’m getting more calls for mural panels or themed type series that are appropriate for their venue. “
The artist recently completed a series of Cinco de Mayo paintings of dancers and musicians in his characteristic *feel good* style.  There were some delays, according to the artist who stated that, “restoring the sign on the west End of the Wool & Mohair building (in Alpine ,Texas ) slowed the completion of the Cinco de Mayo series but the paintings are now hanging in Los Jalapenos Restaurant on Murphy Street. The Murphy Street weekend festivities will kick off with a reception for the show on Thursday the 29th, August (5:00 – 7:00 PM) at Los Jalapenos.”

Popular “feel good artist” J.R. Smith’s Paintings Sell Right Off the Artist’s Easel!

Artist J.R. Smith does well with painting sales and commissions in his home state of Texas. Even as he sent me photographs of his art for this blog article, the artist reported that he’d just received two more painting commissions that day. An art lover visiting the artist’s studio bought the painting titled Spring Ocotillo and Dove as the artist sat working on it at his easel!

The well-known and well-liked artist was painting on a Texas ranch over thirty years ago when someone referred to him as a “cowboy artist.” J.R. much prefers the designation made by one art critic who called the artist’s work “feel good art.” J.R. Smith paints public art murals and frequently exhibits his easel size landscapes, horse paintings, other animal paintings, architectural views, portraits, and abstract works in art exhibitions throughout Texas. The Texas-based artist receives national and international attention via exhibitions of his work and via his website. According to J.R. Smith, The Judd foundation hosts numerous art exhibits in their facilities throughout the town of Marfa, Texas, and “for the month of October the foundation has numerous festivities that draw folks from all over the world.”

“One of the main attractions in Marfa is the historic Paisano Hotel. During the filming of the classic film Giant, Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean stayed in the Paisano Hotel. The hotel has an exhibition space named the Greasewood Gallery and I had a very successful abstract show at their Greasewood Gallery last October during the Chinati Foundation festivities. From the show, my painting Turquoise-spikes went to entertainer Matt Skinner of Fort Collins, Colorado.”

Italian sportsman and art collector Mario Nobili recently hunted elk at a ranch in the Alpine, Texas area. He and his wife also traveled to New Mexico and shopped for art.  They stayed at the historic Holland Hotel where artist J. R. Smith has work on display and expressed an interest in visiting the artist’s studio. The artist contacted and the studio visit arranged,  Mr. Nobili arrived and purchased two pronghorn sheep paintings on canvas and a larger image on a wood panel.  The canvases removed from their stretchers, rolled and wrapped for the Nobilis to carry back to Italy on the plane. The large painting on wood put into a crate and shipped to Italy. The collector also commissioned a painting and plans to return to buy more from artist J.R. Smith.

Ghost Home, J.R. Smith

Ghost towns are another popular tourist attraction, and J.R.’s  Ghost Home is a painting based on a building in the ghost town in Terlingua, Texas.
The busy artist recently completed the sixth of a series of nine Cinco de Mayo themed pieces for a Mexican restaurant and is at work on two mural panels, four by eight feet in dimension each, commissioned for a bar and restaurant.
You can contact the artist and view more paintings on his website www.jr-art.com.  You can also view more of his artwork in our sidebar image gallery at right.
