Artists Switch From Labeling Their Paintings Acrylic To *Synthetic Polymer*

I wrote and published this article in June of 2012, yet artists are still commenting on it.

Featured it again in 2015, and for a 3rd time October 2016.  Here’s the original article–

I don’t know all the reasons for acrylic shame, but I do know that many galleries and artists have long labeled acrylic paintings as *mixed media* to help increase sales. I’ve also heard stories of art collectors losing interest and walking away from a painting once they learned it was painted with acrylic paints.

Lately, I have noticed a new trend–contemporary artists are labeling their paintings *synthetic polymer* paintings rather than use the dreaded word *acrylic* to describe their work.

I’m thinking of doing the same. Synthetic polymer does sound more advanced, up-to-the-minute, complex. Perhaps *synthetic polymer* as a medium is actually more accurate a description, since *acrylic* does come in many forms other than paint. There are acrylic nails, acrylic fish tanks, acrylic comes in sheets, there are acrylic fibers, and acrylic acids. Just using the word *acrylic* alone in a line description assumes that the reader/viewer of your work will know that refers to artist acrylic paints. As contemporary artists continue to expand the materials they work with it may just be necessary to use *synthetic polymer* to describe the paint used, for accuracy and clarity. What do you think? Are you willing to drop the use of the term *acrylic painting* and start describing your paintings at *synthetic polymer paintings*? If so, why? For more accurate descriptions? In her own artist statement, she tells us how she creates intense personal moments by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer around in circles. Her mixed media artworks appear as dreamlike images where fiction and reality meet, well-known tropes merge, meanings shift, past and present fuse.

Her works are based on formal associations which open a unique poetic vein. Multilayered images arise in which the fragility and instability of seemingly certain reality is questioned.




By choosing mainly formal solutions, Tammie LaMountain wants to amplify the astonishment of the spectator by creating compositions or settings that generate tranquil poetic images that leave traces and balances on the edge of recognition and alienation.




Her works feature coincidental, accidental and unexpected connections, combining unrelated aspects that lead to surprising analogies. By questioning the concept of movement, she tries to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels, which incite the viewer to make new personal associations. Her works doesn’t reference recognizable form. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted.

Tammie LaMountain currently lives and works in the US city of Los Angeles, California.

Michelle has exhibited her work in numerous group shows and many of her art pieces remain in private art collections. Her public art work was placed on permanent display in the Florida State Capitol Buildings. In 2010, she had a solo exhibition in Coconut Grove, Florida in conjunction with the Coconut Grove Art Stroll, displaying over sixteen of her artworks in the transformed Dharma Studio space for the evening along with live music and cocktails.

She has five years experience as a professional accountant, and applied her business sense to creative arts, founding Scarlet Art Studios which explores custom UV reactive and couture clothing, as well as offering other crafty interpretations of everyday objects.

Her public art project, The Bearing Public Sculpture Project, in Spokane, Washington, is a life-size bronze sculpture depicting a woman carrying a man in a basket balanced on her head. The man in the basket is holding a military rifle. The work is meant to be a thought-provoking metaphor for the strength of the human spirit under the weight of war. The sculpture has the partial funding of a grant from the Puffin Foundation, but more funding is still needed to complete the project.

Attention writers, researchers, photographers, visual artists, and image-makers!

The Multiple eXposure Project is a multimedia, multi/trans/inter-disciplinary artistic practice and research-based initiative that explores the many layers of image-making, participatory photography, visual ethnography, and performative encounter(s) between the image and the spectator.

We are happy to announce that we will be publishing the very first issue of our collaborative zine and we are now accepting submissions until December 31, 2014.

The theme of our upcoming zine is “Self-as-Subject”, an exploration of the “self” and its manifold permutations – its presence, identity, representation, liminality, and (dis)embodiment – in this day and age of digital madness, hyperreality and mobility.

The zine is multimedia so we are accepting text and image-based submissions related to the theme in any format imaginable such as: articles, essays, reviews, short stories, poetry, interviews, photographs (film or analogue), visual narratives, videos, digital art, illustrations, cartoons, mixed media, collages, experimental pieces, etc. Collaborative projects are very much welcome. Multiple entries are also accepted. Digital and printed copies of the zine will be released.

Some notes to remember:

–   Please include your name, short profile, country of origin, and blog/website (if applicable) in your email.

–   Photo submissions in jpeg format must include a title and description.

–   When necessary, please follow the proper citations (MLA style) in article submissions.

GE Aviation – Asheville, a global leader in jet engine and aircraft system production, seeks to commission an aviation inspired piece of public art to be installed at the entrance of its newly built advanced composites factory located at 502 Sweeten Creek Industrial Park, Asheville, NC 28803. This 170,000-square-foot facility will be the first in the world to mass-produce engine components made of advanced ceramic matrix composite materials.

GE Aviation – Asheville is a world-leading provider of jet and turboprop engines, components and integrated systems for commercial, military, business, and general aviation aircraft, and ship propulsion applications. A jet engine specific reference is desirable, but not required.

ELIGIBILITY  This opportunity is open to any artist or artist team living and working in North Carolina. Preference will be given to artists living in the 23 counties of western North Carolina.


The piece will be installed outdoors in a 10’ by 10’ square space (vertical dimension flexible) near the entrance of the building. Any necessary footings or site preparations will be the responsibility of the artist

Climate, maintenance, safety, and durability must be addressed in the design. Vehicular and pedestrian traffic must also be considered. Incorporating green practices or materials is desirable. ! The finished piece will require little to no regular maintenance. The selected artist will be expected to collaborate! with all necessary parties for the successful installation of the piece.!

Up to three finalists will be selected directly from the initially submitted RFQ applications to present detailed proposals. From the pool of interviewed finalists, the selection committee will commission one piece.

A selection committee of five to seven members, including an artist or public art professional, and at least four GE Aviation – Asheville representatives will review submissions and award the contract. Plato! Strategies, a public art consulting firm, will facilitate the selection process.

Previous experience in design, production, and installation of public art.

Approach to the project,  articulated in the statement of interest. Appropriate facility and technical capabilities for design, production,  and installation!

  • Demonstrated ability to work within a budget and meet deadlines

Interviews with the selection committee are scheduled for Friday, September 19, at the GE Aviation – Asheville offices.


This project is managed by GE Aviation – Asheville, under contract with Plato Strategies.

The chosen artist will be required to provide certification of:

GE Aviation – Asheville requires that the final approved contract for professional services specify that the selected artist(s) shall maintain at all times during the term of the contract, at its sole expense:

Statutory workers’ compensation in accordance with the laws of the state where such compensation would be payable. Employers’ liability (Coverage B) with limits of not less than $500,000 per accident. Automobile liability insurance on any owned, non-owned or rented vehicle with limits of at least $1,000,000 per occurrence combined single limit bodily injury and property damage. Comprehensive general liability, including products liability, completed operations liability, blanket contractual liability, broad form property damage and personal injury liability insurance with limits of at least $1,000,000 per occurrence combined single limit. Professional services liability for a limit of not less than $1,000,000 per occurrence. Visual artists cannot obtain professional liability insurance; however, in the event that services delivered as a part of this agreement require professional services by a subcontractor of the ARTISTS, Professional Liability, Errors and Omissions coverage shall be provided by the subcontractor. “Professional Services”, for the purposes of this agreement section shall mean any services provided by a licensed professional, such as structural review or engineering. The subcontractor of the ARTISTS shall provide a certificate of insurance to ARTISTS as to proof of Professional Liability Insurance.

GE Aviation – Asheville shall be named as additional insured and be provided with a certificate of insurance prior to the effective date of the contract or any renewal contract. GE Aviation – Asheville shall be provided with all renewal certificates within 30 days of the expiration date of any and all policies listed on the certificate of insurance.

In a recent Studio Beat interview, that you can read it its entirety here, we see the artist at work in his studio, gorgeous works in progress leaning against walls. Dil Hildebrand describes to his interviewer and readers how he creates, saying– “In a regular classical painting of a vase on a table, there is pretending. However, what I’m trying to do is have the work physically pretend to be the thing.”

Canadian painter Dil Hildebrand has received much critical acclaim since 2006, when he quit his job as a theatre set painter and went back to school for an MFA. Artist Opportunity: Fluctuations Print Exchange, Deadline July 19th

Submissions are now open for the first Recession Art Print Exchange, Fluctuations—the theme of the print exchange will be the very idea of exchanging; fluctuations between giving and receiving.

19 artists will be selected to participate in creating original prints in an edition size of 21. Each participant will receive their own complete portfolio of this exchange, and the additional prints will be on view during a reception that will be held on September 27th 2013.

In each artist’s submission, submit a clear proposal of the print including images (sketches, collages, photos) of the proposed work or images of previous work if necessary.

All prints must conform to the dimensions of 11″ x 14″ (approximately 1/4 of a standard sheet of industry printmaking paper).

All printmaking processes will be considered for this print exchange, though digital prints must also contain one or more hand-pulled elements in the final artwork. We encourage innovative, mixed media approaches to printmaking.

The print exchange is open to artists living within the United States and overseas. Portfolios can be sent by mail to each recipient or can be picked up at our location in Brooklyn. Each artist is responsible for the cost of shipping.

Kathryn Arnold works in her studio in San Francisco. It is a large space with a skywell that keeps track of the time. Her work contains two intertwining veins. One is filled with large, colorful oils on canvas. The other vein includes drawings that are black and white mixed media works on paper. Both display the density and layered mark-making that points to artistic process and content.

Kathryn Arnold’s Artist Statement: 

“The paintings are a result of intuitive nonobjective processes and contain my search for visual “magic.” The sense of touch and chaotic energy of color and marks play an important role in building up layers that function to create an encompassing, enveloping field and bewildering space. The grid at times becomes a reference point and the intrinsic relating of parts form poetry; an interplay between subjective and objective realities.”

Kathryn Arnold has an MFA degree, exhibits nationally in galleries, universities and art centers, and is a recipient of several fellowships, grants and awards, including an NEA Regional Fellowship. Kathryn’s work is included in numerous public and private collections.

On-The-Scene Artist-Correspondent Reviews the Art Basel Fair 2012 + Art Miami

New York City artist Blossom Verlinsky sent some shots she grabbed at the current and in-progress Art Basel Art Fair, Miami, and the Art Miami Fair in Florida. Blossom included her commentary on each piece she sent an image for, including mixed media, paintings, collage, photography, sculpture, installation, performance, and textiles– all diverse works by such artists as Kiki Smith, Alexander Calder, Masami Teraoka, Benjamin Edelstein, Li Hui, Adolph Gottlieb, Sigmar Polke, Sissi, Frank Stella, Olga De Amaral, Franck Loret, George Sherwood, Philip Taafe, Fred Tomaselli, Robert Diago, and a painting influenced by mentor Fernand Leger painted by William Klein in 1949.

The Art at The Art Basel Show was not as exciting as the crowds streaming through, more costumed than dressed(perhaps as the people they wanted to be). There was a great deal of frantic hunting and gathering – not much contemplating of the art itself – I was disappointed by the quality of the art (not the best examples of that particular artist). The Art Basel Show last year had more substance and was much better. Although, one always finds art that speaks to you, that grabs you.

The Art Miami Shows in Wynwood were much more interesting, personal and inventive. I am sending you several images that were of interest to me for various reasons – some artworks
that I had wanted to include were unfortunately un-photographable.

New Paintings by San Francisco Bay Area Artist Marian Yap

Today we are featuring two paintings in Haiku Threads, a new series by Marian Yap, a San Francisco Bay Area artist. 
Marian says: “The green one is titled Celadon, the red one is titled Cinnabar.  Celadon green and cinnabar red are colors that appear frequently in Chinese fine arts, architecture, furniture, ceramics and textiles.  My work is generally abstract and I paint on canvas and paper.  I also do printmaking– primarily monotypes.  Let me know if you would like more information. ‘SYNTAX’: Connecticut Women Artists Make Their Mixed Media Mark

It is not often that you find groups of women artists who create work independently, meet to critique their work and share ideas, then exhibit their creations collectively throughout the state.  Syntax is proud to be such a unique group.  The nine members met at mixed media workshops held by Massachusetts artist Debi Pendell.  These nine women, who live and work across Connecticut, combine their diverse creative skills and varied artistic styles in ways that create a synergistic dialogue between their artworks and the viewing public.
Members of Syntax are proficient in many mixed media techniques, including faux encaustic, collage, book-making, paper-making, painting, creating unusual textures, as well as assemblage.  Their diverse educational backgrounds range from attending workshops where they refine their unique artistic skills, to Master’s Degrees in Fine Art.  Each woman brings her unique strengths to all phases of the group process, and participates in planning and hanging all Syntax exhibitions.

Syntax artists’ first exhibition was held at the Noah Webster Library Gallery, West Hartford, in 2010.  Since then, the group has had a full schedule of exhibitions, including the Ellen Hyde Phillips Gallery in Fairfield, and the River Street Gallery in New Haven.  Both exhibitions were well attended by gallery-goers from across the region.  Syntax has also held exhibitions of their artwork on the Stamford and Storrs campuses of The University of Connecticut.   Their exhibition in Storrs was augmented by educational displays created by each artist to demonstrate her unique mixed media processes.

The artists continually inspire each other to create, grow and share their artwork with the public.   Although their artistic training and approaches vary, they share a commitment to creating dynamic and engaging works with a variety of materials and innovative techniques. While each artist’s work is highly individual, the group shares mutual respect and a heartfelt joy in making art.  As one member of Syntax, Jan McLean, says “It’s an honor and a privilege to be part of this amazing group, and I treasure the bond of friendship, our mutual support, as well as the common appreciation of the love of making art.”

The group already has several exhibitions scheduled for the future.  This September, Syntax will take exhibiting together to a new level, creating all of their artwork in a standard twelve-inch square format.   The exhibit, titled “PHOOM! The Power of 9 Squared,” will contain over 50 mixed media works of art.  Victoria Sivigny, Syntax member and show coördinator, tells us “Syntax will engage and inform a diverse audience in south central Connecticut with this wonderful opportunity to display our artwork in a café gallery setting known for its unique approach to the arts.  The gallery owner, Tracey Burrill, has a passion for the arts which engages a wide audience across all age groups.”  The show takes place at The Funky Monkey Café & Gallery, Cheshire, Connecticut, opening with a reception on Friday September 7, 2012 from 7 to 9 p.m. and continuing through September 29.  The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception.  Admission to the opening and exhibition is free.  A collaborative piece of art, created by the nine artists, will be raffled off to one lucky winner at the end of the exhibition.

Kolaj magazine is a quarterly, printed magazine about contemporary collage. Kolaj is published in Montreal, Quebec by Maison KasiniYou can submit an article on how your collage is made, how your collage is exhibited, and how collages are collected to Kolaj magazine. Collagerie at Stew Gallery, Norwich, UK

Submission deadline: October 1st 2012

Stew Gallery is looking for collage artists for an upcoming exhibition. Collagerie is described as a celebration of collage art and the individual styles of contemporary artists using traditional cut and paste techniques. The exhibition will be presented from November 10th to 16th 2012.

The deadline for submitting images to the gallery is October 1st 2012 and the selected artists will be contacted by October 5th. All submission information and guidelines can be found on Collagerie‘s facebook page

Stew is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation based in Norfolk, UK. It was founded over three years ago by a group of graduates, students and lecturers from the Norfolk School of Art and Design. Apart from the gallery, Stew is also home to studio spaces and publicly accessible screen printing rooms.
