According to Global Study Online Art Sales To Grow Fast

According to a New York daily news article, the online fine art market is expected to more than double to $3.76 billion in the next five years.

Younger collectors and first-time buyers seem to prefer buying art online rather than in art galleries.  Yet online art sites do not threaten gallery sales in the same way Internet availability has undermined the film, print book and music recording industry.

Online Original Art Sales: Home Decor vs Contemporary Gallery Venues

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 8.15.55 AM

I’ve noticed that when artists and others discuss the virtue of online art sales, that much is assumed. Seldom is a distinction made between venues that clearly appeal to the home decor shopper and venues that actual collectors of contemporary fine art may frequent looking for new artwork to add their collections.

Artsy Home is clearly a home decor online sale site. Beside having *home* in their name, their sales categories include artisan crafted lamps, ceramics, tile and mosaic, fiber and textiles, weaving and wicker, woodworking, wall art objects, and seasonal painting, as well as photography and sculpture. As a painter, photographic artist, or sculptor, will your work be a better fit and actually sell on a home decor site such as Artsy Home, rather than in an online gallery? There are numerous online art galleries, such as Saatchi online and many more. We’ve put together an extensive list of clickable links to art sales venues that provide artists with many more options.

1St Dibs is a top online sales site with categories that include furniture, fine art, jewelry & watches, fashion, and collections.  The 1St Dibs fine art items are sold from within storefronts that are operated by physical galleries using the platform to expand their sales into the online market. Each gallery pays the fees and expenses associated with setting up and maintaining their site shop, and many galleries continue to take their 50% commission for online sales. I am familiar with the process of getting into a 1St dibs gallery, since my artwork is represented in the Schroder Romero Gallery 1St Dibs Store. Schroder Romero is a Brooklyn, New York based art gallery that has moved into online sales, not only with their 1St Dibs store but also with their Schroder Romero Editions site. Within the 1St Dibs *collections* category, Schroder Romero Gallery is listed as a themed collection of fine art available for purchase.

New Online Art Sales Site: Showflipper

Sandeep Joshi contacted me about his dream to give a platform to artists that would connect artists and art lovers around the world… a dream of a new platform, where artists like you can exhibit and SELL their art. The new site is  Showflipper. Artist’s can get a free store now. But apparently, the site has not yet launched.

Please send your 10 creations at www.showflipper.com and get your free store today.

As new sites open and older established site transform, we continue to update our  1,100+ Places to Sell Your Art PDF resource list for artists.

Reboot of 20 X 200, 100ArtWorks UK, ArtBomb etc

It can be difficult to keep up with all the restructuring that online sales sites go through.

The 20 x 200 online print sales site went offline to restructure. The 20 x 200 site is a project of Jen Bekman of the New York City Jen Bekman Gallery www.jenbekman.com. If you visit the 20 x 200 site now, you can sign up for the Reboot List for early word on the 20 x 200 relaunch. There is no mention of whether the new site will also have an image upload submissions feature for artists to submit their work, an option the former site offered.

UK-based 100Artworks online print sales site has become Tower Art Gallery with print sales, sales of original paintings and sculpture as well as other art items.

ArtExchange, one of the smaller art sales sites, has a notice posted–

Online sales sites continue to try a variety of configurations and tactics to bring in buyers. ArtBomb Daily , based in Canada, is an email blast that goes to over 10,000 subscribers each morning. Bidding on the selected artworks in an auction begins each day at 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. EST. It is a silent auction on-line. Anonymous. Private.  Another aspect of ArtBomb is Artbomb New York, which is currently under construction and is set to re-launch April 1st. The site will be curated by gallery owner/curator Joshua James.  Please submit work for consideration to josh@artbombny.com.

Artists Get Matched to Vacant Storefront Exhibition Opportunities

Shunpike partners with city and business leaders in Seattle and several Puget Sound cities to match artists and arts groups with vacant storefronts. Their program is part of a national wave of community-driven collaborations between neighborhoods, cities, businesses and artists – including similar empty storefront exhibition programs in San Francisco, Portland Oregon and New York.

Artists interested in finding further opportunities to show and sell their work, many opportunities are listed in our PDF resources–
