Artist Found Her Paintings On Not One, Or Two, But on Three Music Album Covers! Uncompensated and Uncredited!

Yesterday, we posted a video on how to do a reverse image search using TinEye.  Artist Corrine Bayraktaroglu also alerted us to the online tool Google Reverse Image Search. She wrote: “Early in May, I had read somewhere that you can do a reverse image search on Google.  So I tried it, and was shocked to find one of my photographs on a slide show for school digital backgrounds. Doing a reverse image search can help you find your images even if the infringer has renamed the file or stripped away the data. I continue to find other images being exploited and used for music covers, in music videos, by art and craft companies, etc.”

So when Artist Corrine first learned of  Google reverse image search and gave it a try searching some of her own art images she found her artwork used on several sites without crediting her. What did she do? Corrine submitted DMCA reports or Take Down letters to each site requesting that they remove her uncredited art images.
But then the artist also discovered her portrait painting of her daughter reproduced on the Zearle Youthful Folly music album cover without crediting her or compensating her. “The really sad part is that I don’t get a lot of traffic on my blog, and my art sales are almost zero, so I really didn’t think too many people were interested in my work.  I guess I got that all wrong, huh!” says Corrine. She has openly shared the details of the misuse of her art image on this album cover by writing about it on her blog, and you can read her post here.

Corrine sent us a photo of her original easel painting portrait of her daughter. She keeps the painting in her home. Corrine wrote: “For privacy/professional reasons I don’t want to use my daughter’s name or photograph” published online at this time. The photo above shows a larger version of Corrine’s portrait painting of her daughter displayed in a street art project. However, the artist is convinced that the Zearle Youthful Folly album cover art is not only her easel painting version of the portrait, but also her own photograph of her easel painting that she had once posted to her blog and not a photograph of the street art version of her art. “Nobody could have taken the image (used on the album cover), the photo is based on an interior shot, the lighting would be a very different and a crisper version (of the image) had it been taken outdoors. Plus the person responsible has admitted to using my photo in his email to me. When I posted the photo online it was blurred (just as on the album cover),” Corrine wrote to us.

The artist has now become proactive when sharing her art images.  Corrine wrote that when she started her blog 6 years ago, ” like any fairly new artist I wanted to promote my work. I made the mistake early on of putting out higher resolution pics.” Later, she posted only lower resolution photos of her work and eventually began using– ” a variety of means to try to protect my photographs and images of my paintings: using right-click features on my blog, reducing the size of the image, sometimes putting on a small watermark of my full name or an initial stamp with CB on the online version of the images.”  For the most part she was able to keep track of the use of her images. She sent out cease and desist notices when needed. “I kept regular track of my work, but regular searches didn’t expose the current crop of images.”  Only by using the reverse image search tool did Corrine make her discoveries. She has since deleted her Flickr account, removed many images from her Facebook page and her Picasa album, and put the bulk of her blog entries into draft mode.  “I have taken screenshots of infringing sites and made HUGE changes on my site. I’m vigilant about filing DMCA reports and have asked Google to remove some of my images, plus I’ve added a no pin (Pinterest) meta tag to my blog.”

This artist is fighting back in other ways too! And you can help her get visibility and raise awareness by sharing this blog post on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites using the share buttons at the bottom of this post. When Corrine Bayrak contacted Artist Marketing Resources, we shared copyright resources with the artist. As we were discussing options, the artist  discovered another of her artwork reproduced on a second music album cover  produced by Prospect Records

UPDATE! Latest Update–this just in from artist Corrine Bayraktaroglu :
Marie,

My journey into copyright infringement is getting weirder– a wiki site mistakenly listed one of my spin paintings as being done by Damien Hirst and then I find a news article about a man arrested trying to sell fake Hirst paintings to Sotheby’s.

ps. I think my daughter has the spin art painting depicted in the news article hanging in her garage LOL.

Google Art Project and Wikipediart

Google Art Project

I love to research artists on Pinterest and online, but what I find is limited to what others have uploaded which can be frustrating when looking for quality examples by specific artists. Other artists have mentioned the limitations of finding art images online. Few seem to know about a couple of comprehensive resources for finding and viewing art online–Google Art Project and Wikipediart.

Google Art Project

What is the Google Art Project?

The Google Art Project is a collaboration between Google and 151 acclaimed art partners from across 40 countries. Using a combination of various Google technologies and expert information provided by their museum partners, users can explore a range of artworks at brush stroke level detail, take a virtual tour of a museum and even build their own collections to share.

Few people will ever be lucky enough to be able to visit every museum or see every work of art they’re interested in, but now many more can enjoy over 30,000 works of art from sculpture to architecture and drawings and explore over 150 collections from 40 countries, all in one place. We’re lucky that Google has the technology to make this kind of project a reality.

In addition to the incredible artwork from collections around the world, such as paintings, drawings, sculptures, historic and religious artefacts, photographs and important manuscripts, there is a wealth of additional material such as expertly narrated videos, audio guides, viewing notes, and detailed information to provide an invaluable range of content for visitors.

Simply select a museum from the homepage and then either choose ‘Explore the museum’ or ‘View Artwork’. Once you are in the main site use the drop-down menus or the side info bar to navigate between artworks and museums. You can also create and share your own collections online.

Wikipediart is a collection of art blogs for your to explore and review. Artists can easily create their own free simple blog to share their artwork and artist news on the Wikipediart site. Navigating Wikipedia art is similar StumbleUpon–you click a button at upper left to view the next blog. There is also a Wikipedia Art Shop that opened on May 6, 2012. One artist set up an Ebay + Wikipedia Art Shop and sent me the link.  Very few artists are aware of this new free resource to promote their art. In fact, it seems a bit dead there. But you can be one of the first to start livening things up by adding your art in a blog or as part of the art shop.

How To Get More Discounts On Artist Materials Online + 100K Poets and Musicians For Change

Spray paint cans

I prefer to stay in my studio rather than go out and shop, so I often buy artist materials online rather than waste time changing into clothes my public persona wears, driving, parking, getting gas, driving back, etc. But of course when buying online there are always shipping costs.

Recently, I ordered a few cans of Montana Gold Spray paint from Utrecht and the shipping fee came to eleven dollars. A reasonable fee to have several cans of spray paint delivered to my door, but then why pay it if I can get free shipping? So I did a Google search on the term *Utrecht Coupons* which gave me a list of site links. I tried this one which had the Utrecht free shipping code W518. When I typed W518 into my online order form the eleven dollar shipping fee was subtracted from my invoice.

You can do the same for other artist materials suppliers–Google search the terms *Cheap Joe’s coupons*, *Daniel Smith coupons*, *Jerry’s Artarama coupons*, etc. You’ll find several sites offering coupons for each of those online stores. Check some of the coupon sites and soon you will know which ones have the best active discount codes for small orders and for large discounts on larger orders. This is a way for you to potentially save hundreds of dollars.

I’ve know Michael Rothenberg for a long time. Last month he celebrated his 15th anniversary of his literary ezine Big Bridge–and featured my poetry in his fifteen anniversary issue.

Last night he sent this to me:

OKAY everybody!!

It’s time to spread the word and sign up organizers for 100 Thousand Poets for Change and 100 Thousand Poets for Change on September 29.

Over 560 events confirmed in 100 countries so far. But I know there are tons of poets and musicians out there who want to be involved. We just have to tell them what’s happening. They can write me at walterblue@bigbridge.org, or sign up on the website at www.100tpc.org.

Please post this on your wall, on your friends wall, and send out a notice by email, tweet and share. This will be a historical global gathering.

Best, Michael

Art on Amazon–A Google+ Public Page

(please ignore this verification code: {EAV:f3a728645d545cb0}) If you like using Google+ you may have noticed the option to create a *page* and make it *public* to all Google+ users. Yesterday, I created a Google+ page for the Transmedia Artist Amazon store. I named this Google+ page Art on Amazon.

I used the Artists on Amazon logo above, but simplified the page name to Art on Amazon to bring more people interested in art to the page. This new Google+ page is more than just a static profile page. I will continue to post items to a stream from this page and encourage artists selling in the store to do so as well.  I have already added several items listed in the Transmedia Artist Amazon store. Visitors may comment on these and other  posts.

The Art on Amazon Google+ page is a great place for artists selling in the Transmedia Artist Amazon store to post more about their art and interact with buyers. For instance, artists may share details and behind the scenes details and photos about the making of an artwork, or share photos from an art exhibition, and more. This will help bring interest and buyers. I plan to post to the Art on Amazon Google+ page daily, and would like to see store artists post as well.

All are welcome to the Art on Amazon Google+ page.

How I Got a $100+ Google AdWords Giftcard

Front of The New 100 dollar bill

Image via Wikipedia

Yesterday, I began setting up a Google AdWords ad campaign for my Amazon store, with ads for each art work listed. I used  a $100.00 gift card to start.

When I entered the Gift Card code I received a balance $105.00 to use for my pay-per-click ads.

Google sent the gift card to me after I completed a video course in how to use AdWords to create pay-per-click ads. Complete the course and Google will send a $100. gift card to you a couple of weeks later.

To go to the Google video course, click the hyperlinked green work *ENGAGE*  in my article first published by Technorati news.
