2018 Marks the 10th Anniversary for Artist Marketing Resources

I spent new years eve at a small beach party in Mexico–and yes, I am trying to sympathize with all of you in snow, and for being stuck in what I’ve heard has been an unusually cold and snowy winter in the eastern parts of the US. But I’m using wifi on a tropical beach, enjoying the sound of the waves, and reminiscing on how ten years ago (in late January and early February) I started creating what is now Artist Marketing Resource.

I really need the beach time, and haven’t published as many articles of late, and yet artists all over the world continue to use this site around the clock.

Our most popular article offers 40 free Etsy listings–read it here. Every day of the year, multiple artists sign up using the link in our article to get their 40 free listings. I receive an email from Etsy each time one does! Plus I get free listings each time an artist signs up. So I have thousands by now and I’d like to find some nice art items in Mexico to offer in my Etsy shop.

Another popular article tells artists how to use the “97” shipping codes on their art shipments to avoid paying extra fees–and doesn’t everyone want to know about that! Here is the link to the article.

Artists remain very interested in labeling their artworks without using the term “acrylic” for various reasons–and you can read that article here.

Our most popular resource–besides all the useful information here on this site–is our hugely expanded International Art Gallery Directory–now over 800 pages in length! If you’d like to find out how to get a digital copy click here.  The International Art Gallery Directory is available in various formats, including a printable Word file, printable PDF, and in iCloud which you can access and use on your iPad or other tablet, cell phone, and computer.

If you need anything do not hesitate to make contact. Some artist do call–but many calls are not getting through to me down here on the beach! So the best way is via email at mariekazalia@gmail.com

USA, Canada, Asia: Art Dealer Renowned For Print Editions

Patrick Painter is an American art dealer who in 1991 began Patrick Painter Editions in Vancouver, Canada and Hong Kong. He is also the owner of Patrick Painter Inc., which he opened in 1997, that includes two art galleries in Santa Monica, California.

Last month, Patrick Painter launched his Facebook fan page as a Public Personality–find it here.

Early in his career, Patrick Painter was mentored by famed art dealer Leo Castelli and curator Walter Hopps.  According to Wikipedia,…” Patrick Painter Editions was established in a depressed market, [yet] he managed to build his business upon the success he had turning editions. Fine art prints, or multiple editions, were looked down upon at the time by many critics and collectors; Painter created a unique approach to the market. In 1996, 20 galleries worldwide had shows of exclusively Patrick Painter Editions.

 FEEDBACK FROM ARTISTS:

It’s great getting unsolicited feedback about our resources and services, such as in a tweet that we received from artist Joyce Dade regarding the $39.95 price of our International Art Galleries Directory. Joyce tweeted to us @TransArtGuide “A very decent price for such an art directory.  Paid $100 years ago for Italian version. I forget the name of publisher.”

Artist Alexis Avlamis, an artist curated into the Drawing Center New York City and featured on the Art21 interview blog wrote to us, in part:

“About two months ago, I stumbled upon your websıte and bought both the Transmedıa Artıst Guıde to Makıng Artıst Submıssıons and the Internatıonal Art Gallery Dırectory Share Lıst. I found them very professıonal, well wrıtten, ınformatıve and eye openıng, especıally when ıt comes to untanglıng the mysterıes and meshes of the art world.”

This week an artist in Europe wrote in an email:

“Hi Marie, I just wanted to say thanks for doing a good job…” an except from an email we received after our submission got this artist a much-needed magazine feature, a requirement to obtain an artist via to the USA. We are also assisting this artist in completing the USA Artist Visa application.

Plus, last week we received a thank-you gift of an original art piece in the mail from an artist we work with!

Artist Marketing Resources would like to thank all the artists who sent such positive feedback. We’d like to make this a regular monthly feature on our blog. So if you talk about us online, please let us know, and you could get mentioned along with an image and link to your site.

New Book: ART-WRITE, The Writing Guide for Visual Artists

blogArt-Write-Cover

ART-Write, The Writing Guide for Visual Artists, written by Vicki Krohn Amorose, helps guide artists through the process as they write their artist statements, exhibition announcements, press releases, cover letters, blog posts, biographies, social media posts, and much more. Author Vicki Krohn Amorose has a writing background that includes professional positions as Educational Media Writer, Advertising Copywriter, Art Instructor, and Art Gallery Manager.

I read a print copy of her book, which is also available for Amazon Kindle readers and other readers, and found it an excellent resource guide for artists, and much needed! I glided through the chapters, thanks to the no-nonsense writing style of the author. I will return to the book again and again for the writing exercises and prompts.

Author Vicki Krohn Amorose (VKA) agreed to answer questions about her book for the artists who read the Artist Marketing Resources (AMR) blog—

AMR: Vicki, let me share an excerpt from an artist statement sent to me recently —“My work explores the fragility of the human form to delineate cartography of imagined histories and understand the body as a cynosure.”  The word cynosure is used frequently in contemporary art writing. Should artists use a word because others use it? Besides those *at the moment* words, I sometimes read exhibition announcements written in a style copied and re-copied from decades past. How can artists avoid extremes–the miming of the latest or staying stuck in the past? What is “Art Speak” and how does ART-Write, The Writing Guide for Visual Artists help artists to write about their work honestly and in “plain language.”

VKA: I am wholeheartedly opposed to artists using “Art Speak” in their written communications, and the word “cynosure” falls into that category. Art Speak is the vernacular of elite Art-Worldlings, often invented and repeated to impress each other. When writing about your own art, the question shouldn’t be, “Do I sound erudite?” Rather, it should be, “Does my writing help the viewer to see, and does it encourage them to look again?” Art Speak tends to have the opposite effect on the reader/viewer; people furrow their brows and walk away.

I think artists continue to echo phrases because it’s difficult to find comprehensive, current instruction on this subject. I wrote my book to help fill that deficit, and my “no-nonsense” writing style was very deliberate. We can write about the complex subject of individual art in clear, straightforward language.

AMR: The writing exercises in ART-Write, The Writing Guide for Visual Artists helped me think of new ways to write about my work. Please explain the purpose of the writing exercise for artists who say “I don’t explain my work” or “I can’t explain my work.”

VKA: It’s so common to hear artists resist in this way, and I believe this comes from confusion about what is required of them. An artist statement is not a full translation of a visual concept into a written document! Of course you can’t do that, it’s a ridiculous idea. The exercises are designed to bring about the thinking required to connect with an audience. Thinking about your own work can spin off in a thousand directions, so the prompts are a way to reign-in the confusion and develop truthful sentences.

AMR: When and how should artists “name drop” in their writings?

VKA:  Referencing another artist is tricky, because you always want to direct the viewer’s attention to the work in front of them –your work. If you want to mention an artistic influence, make sure you describe how you were specifically inspired. Don’t just “name drop” to fluff your credibility.

AMR: Do you prescribe a structure for writing an artist statement?

VKA: Yes, structure in writing helps to hold the reader’s attention, and I give examples of 3 different structures. These are not complicated. One structure is storytelling. Both art and storytelling are deeply rooted in the human psyche. People find connection through stories.

AMR:  And how do artists know when to put personal details into their statement or instead put those personal details into their bio?

VKA: Again, we come back to what is directly in front of the audience. The artist statement says: “People, meet my art.”  The artist Bio says: “People, meet the artist.” Unless the work in front of the audience is biographical or humorous, keep those details out of your statement and put them in your Bio.

AMR: Can artists buy a book directly from you?

VKA: Yes, and I welcome comments at http://www.artwritebook.com. Thank you for your interest in my book, Marie. I sincerely want the information to reach the visual artists who need it.

Creating Multiple Points of Sale and Art Products

I’ve set up unique buy options for my art and shared my images on Pinterest. The latest research reveals that about 28% of Pinterest users earn 6 figure incomes and use Pinterest to shop for home decor and other products.

My painting, Blue Rice Cracker, is one of 7 paintings selected by an art licensing company for limited edition canvas prints. (I will share that site in future). An art licensing contract will, of course, allow me to sell the original paintings, and so I have Blue Rice Cracker listed for sale on both Artsia and Zatista, since I’ve had painting sale on both sites before.

I am also free to sell paper prints, such as on the Society6 site, and textile prints on the Spoonflower site. On Society6 there is a buy option for my painting printed on this decorative pillow home decor item, which I promote to urban apartment dwellers, home owners, and Interior Designers alike.
